(Cooperation and
Collaboration in the Age of Competition),
Mark
Powell

Cooperation and Collaboration in the Age of Competition
The Tri-State Chinese American Chemical Society will hold its annual symposium on June 10,
from 8:30 AM to 4 PM, at the Rutgers Busch Campus Center, Piscataway
(Address: 604 Bartholomew Rd, Piscataway, NJ 08854. Directions can be found at
http://maps.rutgers.edu/directions.aspx?id=44. Parking is available in lot 51
across from the Busch Campus Center). Registration is free. Free breakfast and
lunch will be provided to all symposium participants.
The annual symposium serves the purpose of bringing the CACS members and
non-member Chinese American chemists together. The theme of this year’s
symposium is “Cooperation and Collaboration in the Age of Competition,”
which attempts to capture the prevailing trend of increasing economic ties
between the US and China in chemistry-related endeavors. For this theme the
keynote speakers will be Dr. Catherine Hunt, president-elect of the American
Chemical Society (ACS) and leader in Technology Partnerships of Rohm and Haas
Co., and Dr. Mark Powell, senior vice-president of Pharmaceutical Development
at Bristol-Myers Squibb. Both Drs. Hunt and Powell have extensive experience
in third-party collaborations with their respective companies, and are
authorities in stewarding successful R&D partnerships.
As a tradition, the symposium will also feature outstanding Chinese-American
chemists. Dr. Margaret Wu, a Senior Scientific Advisor at the Corporate
Strategic Research of ExxonMobil, will talk about the development of
an advanced lubricant that is used in all world-class race cars (Mobil 1®).
Prof. Jing Li of Rutgers University will talk about materials with nanometer
features that have novel properties. Other speakers include technical leaders
and managers from major pharma companies as well as start-ups in the outsourcing business.
Since its founding 25 years ago, the CACS, a volunteer-based, non-political,
non-profit professional organization has worked to address the common interest
and concerns of Chinese-American chemical professionals. It has established
a mentor program to help new comers gain quick footing in their professional
careers in the US. It has presented Young Chemist Award annually to outstanding
high school students to help cultivate interest in chemical sciences.
It has recently added immigration and other legal referral services so
that its members can receive these services at a discounted rate.
Please register on-line at www.tristatecacs.org or via email at info@tristatecacs.org.
Registration on-site is accepted but you are encouraged to register before hand to
ensure your seating and meal order. The CACS promises an exciting conference and a
great opportunity for you to network with your peers.
